Frozen Power

Frozen Power is a multifaceted narrative of power struggles and intrigues, depicting the resistance against German colonial rule in Tanzania. Choreographer Ian Mwaisunga's work begins as a tale shared in the coffee corners of Dar es Salaam. Inspired by historical female rulers in the Singida region who were known to possess extraordinary powers, the poetic dance piece addresses both the role of female rulers in anti-colonial resistance and the importance of reclaiming and re-imagining historical figures for contemporary Tanzania.

Frozen Power is performed by a quintet of dancers accompanied by a live musician. This production was realized with financial support from the Braid fund, the Humboldt forum, and the Embassy of Norway in Dar es Salaam.
